Food Markets & Festivals
Maison de la Plume is located in the town of Roujan.
It is just over 10 km away from the nearest larger city, Pézenas, and roughly 20 km from the centre of Béziers.
- A weekly food market is hosted outside the Roujan town hall every Thursday morning from 8 am to 12 pm. There you will find locally grown fruit and vegetables, as well as locally made goat and sheep cheese.
- The Pézenas market is held on Saturdays and includes food and beverage stalls such as fresh meats, cheese, olives, fruit and farmed vegetables. They also sell household items, toys and clothing. It attracts people from far and wide.
- Festivals and fairs are a plenty in the region during the spring and summertime. Each local village holds it’s own “Fête” and these are planned on weekends in the Spring and summer.
- Pézenas and Béziers both hold evening wine and food festivals, called “Éstivales”, are held one evening a week in July and August. This is a time to showcase the local wineries and includes food stalls and local musicians.
Beaches
Beaches are around 25 km away from Maison de la Plume.
- Cap d’Agde attracts tourists at it’s sandy beaches, boardwalk restaurants and history.
- Marseillan Plage is a beautiful beach side location that includes a harbour, quaint restaurants and freshly caught seafood.
- The seaside town of Sète hosts a water jousting competition every summer. The town is located on one end of the Étang de Thau, a local Oyster and Mussel farming area. There are numerous small restaurants along the Étang that prepare and serve various seafood.
- Some of the other popular beach areas include Vias Plage, Vendres Plage and Mèze.
Lakes & Rivers
There are some great lakes and rivers located within a short drive from Roujan
- Barrage des Olivettes – located close to Vailhan, this man made lake is a result of the Dam of the Peyne river. It is frequented by many locals for swimming and picnicking.
- The River Orb is located to the northwest of Béziers. Many people visit this river to enjoy white water canoeing.
- The Pont du Diable located close to the pottery making village of Saint Jean de Fos is popular among locals and tourists. It is an almost 20 metre high bridge that dates from the first half of the 11th century. It spans the Hérault river and attracts daredevils who choose to risk injury by jumping. While illegal, many thrill seekers still take the chance and jump. Meanwhile, swimmers, cliff jumpers and canoe and stand up paddle boarders enjoy the currents, rock formations and scenery all around.
- The Lac du Salagou is located roughly 30 km from Roujan. It is a reservoir of the Salagou dam and is characterized by it’s rich red clay earth and hill formations. The site of previous volcanic activity, it is a mecca for water sports and hiking. In addition, the Canadair water planes for the regional fire department use this lake to fill their tanks for fighting local fires. Quite a spectacular sight to see!
